A Chin Refugee Suicide

Chin Refugee Committed Suicide Due To Depression In Malaysia
CHINLAND GUARDIAN
A Chin refugee, Mr. Van Peng Lian, last Monday hung himself using an electric wire due to depression, reportedly resulting from facing difficulties in getting registered as a recognised refugee from Burma after going through a series of detentions and deportation in Malaysia and Thailand.
The 23-year-old was arrested last May in their rented house with 15 other Chins in a night raid by Malaysian RELA after coming to Malaysia as an unrecognised refugee since February 2008. Mr. Lian, along with other Chins, was deported to the Thai-Malaysian border after being detained at different locations including 5 days at KLIA Immigration camp, 3 months at Kajang Jail and 3 weeks at Semanyih Immigration Camp.
A Physics graduate from Kalay College, together with other Chin refugees, managed to get back to Malaysia after spending 3 nights reportedly under the agents' control on the Thai-Malaysian border. He was said to have given once an anti-depression counselling at ACTS clinic in Malaysia.
He took his own life about a month after he got back to Malaysia from Thailand.
Van Peng Lian of Cin village, Hakha township, said he got deeply devastated and feeling despondent as he could not get registered with UNHCR even though he was a refugee from Burma, according to his friends. UNHCR did not make any visits to him during his four-month detention at Kajang Jail, sources claimed.
He is survived by his only sister Esther in Malaysia who is said to be 'lonely and grief-stricken'.
In Malaysia, there have been four suicides committed by the Chin refugees only in 2008 due to depression after the UNHCR closed its refugee registration.

Pope Benidict XVI to Burma

VATICAN Archbishop Says Pope 'Ready' To Make A Short Visit To Myanmar
by By Gerard O'Connell, Special Correspondent in Rome
On 2008-11-3

ROME (UCAN) -- Pope Benedict XVI says he is ready to make a stopover in Myanmar if he visits another Asian country, Archbishop Charles Maung Bo of Yangon told UCA News in Rome.
Archbishop Bo met the pope privately on Oct. 23.

The previous week, the Salesian prelate, general secretary of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Myanmar, issued a surprise invitation to Pope Benedict during the archbishop's five-minute intervention at the Synod on the Word of God.

Looking at the pope on Oct. 14, he concluded with the words: "Holy Father, from the time of St. Peter till today, no Holy Father has visited Myanmar. Our warmest welcome to Myanmar!"
The synod burst into spontaneous applause when he finished, participants recalled.

Nine days later, Archbishop Bo was in the pope's private library as part of the ad limina visit every bishop is expected to make once in five years to report to the pope and Vatican officials on the situation in his diocese and country.

"The Holy Father at once pointed out that I had invited him to Myanmar during my synod intervention," Archbishop Bo said. During their private conversation, he recalled, Pope Benedict made it clear "he would be ready to make a short visit to Myanmar if he chooses to visit one of the countries in Asia."

The archbishop found the pope's calmness and "clear mind" impressive amid a busy schedule with numerous visitors. The pontiff was interested in the rehabilitation work the Church was involved in after cyclone Nargis, as well as the general situation in Myanmar.

The Yangon archbishop had not been able to join the other bishops from Myanmar when they made their ad limina visits as a group at the end of May, because he was leading the Church relief efforts in the aftermath of the cyclone that he says killed nearly 150,000 people. He estimated Nargis displaced another 2 million people.

Myanmar has a population of 53 million people, 85 percent of whom are Buddhists, 6 percent Christians and 4 percent Muslims. Of the 3 million Christians, about 700,000 are Catholics. The military has been running the country since 1962 and has suppressed pro-democracy movements.

A Vatican official told UCA News, "It should be stated clearly that there is no persecution against Christianity or Catholics in Myanmar." He also pointed out that even though the Holy See and Myanmar do not have diplomatic relations, the Bangkok-based apostolic delegate to Myanmar can freely visit the country and meet bishops, who also are allowed to travel to the Vatican.

A Church source clarified that Myanmar's Catholic Church enjoys freedom to worship but is not allowed to work freely in the fields of education and health care. "Nor can it express its position on sociopolitical questions in accord with the Church's social teaching," the source said in Rome.
Pope Benedict has made 10 foreign trips since his election in April 2005 -- six European countries and Turkey, which straddles Europe and Asia, as well as Australia, Brazil and the United States. At the close of the synod on Oct. 26, he announced a plan to visit the African countries of Angola and Cameroon in March 2009.

4) Why Does Obama Carry A Hindu Monkey god Charm?

August 20, 2008 – The Chicago Tribune reported in late June, 2008 that Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) carries a series of good luck charms with him. One of those charms is a Hindu brass monkey king. The charm is an image of Hanuman, Hinduism’s monkey god.Brij Mohan Bhama, a politician associated with the ruling party in India, is a follower of Hanuman and presented the Senator with a 2-foot-high gold-plated Hanuman idol, which had been blessed by a dozen Hindu priests in a special prayer service.According to Bhama, “Obama has deep faith in Lord Hanuman and that is why we are presenting an idol of Hanuman to him.” Bhama also told The Hindu news: “We will ensure that Mr. Obama receives the idol by August 24, a day before the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado.” In addition to the idol, Obama will also receive a Hindu hymn book called the Hanuman Chalisa. .

Mingelhzia-A Feminist Response

Mingelhzia—A Feminist Response

Dear Zomi,
I have been closely following the discussions going on regarding Mingelhzia. It seems good to write Behmin to our names. And those of us who want to follow the Western culture with regards to Behmin, that is OK—as long as you’re a guy. Now the problem is this:
In the Western culture, the wife follows the family name of the husband. She now belongs to that clan, and no longer to her original clan.
I, who is a Zomi numei, have my own name, and I belong to a certain clan or Beh. For example let us say that my name is Lia Dim Lun Ciin. And let us suppose that my Behmin is Naulak. Now, if I will follow what some of you have proposed, my name is Dim Lun Ciin Naulak. And of course, I will eventually get married. So what happens to my Naulak?
Let’s say my husband is from Sukte Beh. Will I change my name to Dim Lun Ciin Naulak Sukte? If this is the case, can I belong to two beh? Can I belong to Naulak and at the same time to Sukte? How can this be?
Again, if I am going to write my name as Dim Lun Ciin Sukte, am I really Sukte? Naulak cannot become Sukte. But according to the western culture, I have to follow my husband’s Beh. So where is my original identity? As far as I am concerned, in our Zomi culture, it is true that the wife follows the husband. But her Behmin does not change! I may do or perform my duty as a wife in the Sukte’s tradition, but I don’t become a Sukte Beh because of my husband. I still maintain my Naulak Beh.
It is true that my children will become Sukte, but I can never be. I will always be Naulak. So where is the point in using Behmin in our names? As far as I am concerned, we all know our Zomi names. And we do not need to put our Behmin to remind us that we are Zomis or to show superiority of the male gender!
Please do not get me wrong. I am 100% for our existing Zomi culture and tradition. But if we are going to follow the Westerner’s tradition by using family names, or Behmin, it is not logical for us. Where is the identity or clan of a Zomi woman as a person?
One example. In the West, after a woman gets married, it is accepted that she becomes her husband’s clan. But we Zomis still tend to ask “What is the Beh of your wife or your mother?”
So I want to ask a question to those who think we should use our Behmin in our names. What is the point of all these discussion for a Zomi woman, if we really accept that she is a person just like a Zomi man?
Now you might say, “why don’t we use “Zomi” as our family name?” Zomi is not a name. It is a people group. And some of you proposed using Zo+Behmin. If we say Zo without Mi, than we refer to our ‘Zo’ brothers and sisters.
For my conclusion, why can’t we just accept ourselves the way we are? If some Zomis can survive using their real given names even in the West, why can’t we? Is it so hard to explain who we are or are we dying to be like them? We may live in foreign countries, and follow some of their ways. We can be like them, but we can never be them. Zomi is Zomi.
Thank you. Looking forward to hearing your comments.
